Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then found many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
An important official said the incident rendered him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
